Assignment I: Date 12-02-2021.

Due date: 19-02-2021

1. What all information can one have upon macroscopically investigating the fracture
surface of a failed component? [5]
2. Point out the differences between (a) ductile and brittle fracture, (b) stress concentration
factor and stress intensity factor? [3+3 = 6]
3. Under what circumstances fracture toughness can be coined as ‘material’s property’ [3]
4. Consider two different ceramic material components, A and B having identical volumes
but different m values of 12 and 7 respectively used for a particular application. For the
survival probability of 75%, A and B requires fracture stress values of 666 and 323
MPa respectively. Considering the actual volume of the component in service being
220 times more than the lab scale volumes, find out the fracture stress required for
maintaining the same survival probability. [5]
5. Let’s assume that the tentative fracture toughness of a Steel alloy, as obtained from
reference literature is 60 MPa√m. You require to confirm the fracture toughness using
the machine with smallest possible load cell. For this, you can either use a 1 cm thick
CCT specimen with a and W as 2 cm and 10 cm respectively or a C[T] specimen with
B, a and W of 1 cm, 3 cm and 6 cm respectively. The symbols a, B, W have their usual
meaning. [6]

For C[T],

For CCT

6. A medium carbon steel plate (Yield strength = 330 MPa) of width 77 cm and thickness
1.5 mm with a through the thickness center crack of total length 12 mm is subjected to
a stress of 230 MPa. For Mode I loading determine whether plane strain or plane stress
condition is applicable. Calculate the plastic zone size. [5]
