Lesson Title: 

Living and Non-living

Grade Level: Kindergarten

TEK(S): K.9 Organisms and environments. The student knows that plants and animals have basic needs
and depend on the living and nonliving things around them for survival. The student is expected to: 
o (A)  differentiate between living and nonliving things based upon whether they have
basic needs and produce offspring; and 

Content Objective: Students will 


                                • Be able to identify what is living and not living  
                               • be able to ask and answer questions about living and non-living things to 
                                  make sure they are understanding. 

Target: I can use the outside of school to know what is living and not living

Materials: Clipboard with paper, Pencil, nature area like a garden, park, backyard, etc.

Time period: 35-45 minutes

Introduction/Anticipatory: What do you think is living and not living

Instructional Input/ Modeling:  Students will watch a Brain Pop video About “living and Notliving

Guided Practice: 1. Draw a line down the middle of a page on the clipboard.

2. Label one column living and the other column non-living.

3.Walk around a garden, backyard or park and make observations with your senses.

4. Find objects that are living or non-living.

5. Draw and label the objects under the correct column on your paper.

6. Be able to give a reason for your classification.

 
Checking for Understanding:  I will have a power point and shoe pictures of what is living an not
living.

Closure:  The class will be reading a book about what is living and not living.

Assessment: Students will write 5 living things and 5 Not living things by watching a movie.
