are French, German, Chinese,
Japanese and Russian.
■ He is the founder of one of the
best language portals: LingQ
and promoter of modern
approaches to language
learning. His Youtube channel
is one of the most interesting
in this area.
7 secrets of successful language learning
■ Kaufmann has a series of magazines that are called "7 Secrets to
Successful Language Learning". He tries to record the cycle in every
new language he learns.
1. Give your language enough time.
2. Do what interests you.
3. Be attentive and try to notice the peculiarities in the language.
4. Words are more important than grammar.
5. Be patient.
6. Use modern devices and technologies.
7. Learn to practice the language yourself.
■ Kaufman maintains a video
blog where he shares his
secrets of language
learning. Also on his channel
and on the vastness of
YouTube you can find many
videos in which he
demonstrates his
knowledge, communicating
with users from different
countries and filming video
responses to people from
different parts of the world
in their native language.
Method essence:
■ In one of the videos, Steve
Kaufman says that the essence
of his method is to learn a
large number of words that he
collects from the context that
interests him.
Here is the basic formula by which
the polyglot works: Reading -
focusing on context - learning
phrases, not individual words -
repeating phrases until
understanding of the language is
brought to automatism
The biggest mistake when learning a
foreign language.
■ According to Kaufman, the main mistake in language learning
is that the student gets stuck at one level for too long. So, he
says that in many language schools even the elementary level
is divided into several sublevels, which significantly slows down
the learning process and hinders the movement from the
"school" language to the real one. The polyglot claims that it is
still worth learning the language gradually, without jumping
over levels.
■ Another obstacle to knowledge, Steve Kaufman calls lack of
confidence in their abilities. If a person begins to learn a
language, knowingly convincing himself that he will not
succeed, then most likely it will be so.
■ Steve is studying Russian for the third year. Mr. Kaufman
sets aside 30 minutes to 1 hour to study Russian every day.
First he listens, then he reads what he heard. He argues
that for people who are lazy, but want to learn the language,
there is a lot of "dead" time that can be spent usefully, for
example, when they ... "wash the dishes." Steve, three years
later, still doesn't speak Russian quite correctly, but he is
not afraid to speak with mistakes. The most valuable thing
for him is that he understands what is being said to him.
■ In order to learn Russian, he needed: a small textbook of
Russian grammar; daily half-hour classes, when he listens
and reads what he just listened to; small corrections of his
oral statements in Russian by friends
■ He is currently the President
of KP Wood Ltd, an
international timber trade
company. Together with his
son, Steve Kaufmann founded
the online natural language
learning system LingQ.com.
