Here are the 8 steps required to really help you get the
most out of every solo you transcribe…

STEP 1: CHOOSE
- choose something you love

- choose something appropriate to your skill level

- choose something classic that you can learn from

STEP 2: LISTEN
- listen on repeat

- listen on headphones or good speakers to hear everything crystal clear

- get obsessed with it!

STEP 3: SING
- sing in the shower, car, school, anywhere!!

- sing every inflection and nuance

- sing it in a range that suits your vocal range

STEP 4: LEARN THE NOTES


- methodically work out exactly what the pitches are

- try to do it at normal speed but slow it down if you have to

- memorise it as you go

STEP 5: MIMIC THE STYLE


- copy every nuance and inflection

- try to mirror their tone and articulation

- play along until there’s no difference between you and the recording

STEP 6: WRITE IT DOWN


- doesn’t matter if it’s software or pencil and paper

- make it neat and tidy, give it some love!

- make it accurate as you can

STEP 7: ANALYSE
- what is the chord sequence and how do the notes relate?

- are there repeated patterns?

- what devices can you take into your own playing to grow?

STEP 8: PRACTICE
- take key phrases and work them through every key

- look for harmonic devices to take through the keys

- zoom out and try to capture the feeling and intention of the solo
