FOREWORD AND ADDENDUM
DEVELOPMENT
The HVAC Duct Construction Manuals as published
by The Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contrac:
tors National Association Inc. (SMACNA) are the
main practical standard for Contractors and Engi-
neers for duct construction.
Recently developed proprietary systems, such as
the Transverse Duct Connector System for con
structing rectangular sections of ductwork have not
been covered by the existing manuals. The wide
spread acceptance of the TDC system by contrac:
tors (over 400 systems sold to date) make this
addendum to the existing manuals a necessity.
TDC iS NOT T-24
Some have confused the relationship of the
SMACNA T-24 transverse joint with the TDC sys-
tem. They are not the same profile and the ratings
published for the T-24 joint were not intended to
represent ratings of the TOC joint. SMACNA has
not rated the TDC system. It is considered proprie-
tary and is subject to SMACNA policy on proprie-
tary items, Manufacturers and independent testing
laboratory authorities are to evaluate proprietory
systems using analyses and tests as described in
Section VII of the 1985 Duct Construction
Standards.
The TDC addendum construction tables therefore
display the results of extensive duct testing that fol-
lowed the procedures for Section Vil, combined
with the results of the computer generated equa~
tions based on the actual test findings. Further test-
ing confirmed the accuracy of these results
We thank the technical staff of SMACNA, especially
Mr. John Stratton for his interpretation and analysis
of the Duct Construction Manual.
FUNCTIONAL CRITERIA
The criteria used by SMACNA in its test program
and in development of new duct tables is as
follows:
Maximum joint deflection 0.25”
Maximum sheet deflection on duct
over 24” wide 0.75”
Maximum sheet deflection on duct
19” through 24” wide 0.625”
Maximum sheet deflection on duct
13” through 18” wide 0.500”
Maximum sheet deflection on duct
up to 12” wide 0.375"
Maximum tensile strength of
material 24,000 PSI
Other measurements needed for the computer gen-
erated calculations were: Joint separation, Duct
Corner displacement at the joint and Duct Corner
displacement halfway between the joints.
All measurements were repeated for the various
static pressures, duct sizes and gauges, and were
witnessed and certified by a Pittsburgh Testing Lab-
oratory representative. Test results are available
upon request.
LIMITATIONS
The addendum construction tables are based on
The Lockformer TDC System as constructed
according to the methods shown in the TDC
‘Assembly Instruction Brochure only.
USE OF THE TABLES
Four different types of TDC Duct Construction
Tables follow:
1, 4’ TDC with Autolok Stiffener, Zeebar or equiva-
lent reinforcement.
2. 5’ TDC with Autolok Stiffener, Zeabar or equiva-
lent reinforcement.
3. 4’ TDC with tie rod reinforcement.
4. 8’ TDC with tie rod reinforcement.
The recommended construction method for each
type of intermediate and joint reinforcement is delin-
eated in the TOC Assembly Instruction Brochure
Autolok and Zeebar reinforcements were evaluated
for each duct side separately. When required on
four sides at 4” W.G. and up, the corners must be
tied. When required on two sides, they must be tied
with rods or angles at the ends for 4”, 6” and 10”
pressure classes:
The duct sheet gauges shown are in accordance
with galvanized steel industry standards.
Tests done at 8” and 10” W.G. have not been
included in these tables. Contact The Lockformer
Company for these results and construction
recommendations.
The following charts have been constructed in
accordance with results obtained from tests per-
formed as prescribed by SMACNA in section Vil of
the HVAC DUCT CONSTRUCTION STANDARDS
FIRST EDITION 1985. These charts are not
intended to refiect construction standards in con-
sideration of any other analysis or type of proprie-
tary duct construction system other than TDC.
The Lockformer Company has done extensive test-
ing to insure the validity of data contained in the fol
lowing tables. However, it is the responsibility of
the Contractor or Engineer to determine that proper
materials, manufacturing procedures and assembly
procedures are used to meet the requirements for a
given job. Accordingly, Lockformer shall not be lia~
ble for any damages either incidental or consequen-
tial arising out of the use of this information{ ft 4&-FOOT TEC (Finished length 44”) i
