6, SEVERE COVID-19
6.1. | have COVID-19, When should I seek emergency medical attention?
COVID-19 patients who are either elderly, pregnant, or with other medical problems and
mune systems should be monitored in the hospital as soon as possible.
Do not wait for these severe signs to develop!
Watch out for one or more of the following warning signs:
* Difficulty of breathing:
‘Adult: more than 30 breaths per minute while seated/lying down; Child more
than 40 breaths per minute
Difficulty speaking: unable to complete a sentence
Oxygen saturation (SpO2) less than 92% on room air, or sudden downtrend
ex. 5-point drop within 2-4 hours:
* confusion, changes in behavior, unable to stay awake or to be awakened
+ increasing weakness
* abnormal vital signs: ex. blood pressure too high or too low, pulse is weak or too
fastslow
‘+ _ signs of poor blood circulation and oxygenation (low blood pressure, falls, bluish
fingertips or lips, pale nailbeds, skin looks pale, scanty or no urine output, chest
pain/heaviness)
If hospitalization is necessary, it is advisable to call the hospital first to ensure that it is
open and still accepting patients.
