Social media is becoming increasingly popular amongst all age groups.

However,
sharing personal information on social media websites does have risks.

Do you think that the advantages of social media outweigh the disadvantages?

Social media, undoubtedly, has been a vital determinant of information distribution. However,
it is argued that such digital tool, when used to facilitate personal life and status, can be a
potential threat. While this thinking is valid to a certain extent, I believe that today’s social
platform fosters a sense of connectedness and creates valuable career opportunities.

There are compelling reasons why the trend towards using social media is beneficial to many.
People, especially young job seekers, are likely to improve their employability with the help of
many online job vacancies. In fact, individuals can have access to a variety of recruitment
websites, prompted by social platforms such as Facebook, and prepare themselves better with
job requirements listed online. At the same time, using social media would strengthen a sense
of connectedness among users. In the past, many relationships failed to flourish due to the lack
of interaction, which was most likely driven by geographical distance. However, such issue is no
longer the case as the establishment of social media such as Instagram has allowed people to
keep in touch through online chat and video communications.
Despite the aforementioned benefits, I believe it would be unwise to overlook the downsides of
social media. Since it is freely accessible, children might be exposed to adult and violence-
related content, which is conducive to misguided thoughts and wrongdoings. This, in all
probability, might be the drive for many crime happenings that occur in their future. Besides,
cyberbullying and blackmailing has been the problems of public concern ever since the
establishment of social media. As a result, many people feel increasingly anxious about their
virtual life and this can contribute to their potential mental problems in later life.
All in all, social media can either be beneficial to the development of a person or an unpleasant
experience that many have to undergo.
