Taking a year break before entering higher education has been presented as an

option for all the students worldwide. For the majority, a gap year means an open
door to more discovery made and more career opportunities to relish. This notion,
therefore, has been playing an integral part in every individual’s academic journey.
Although certain people ascertain that taking a year break after graduating from
high school is, more or less, aimless and time-consuming, I strongly subscribe to
this practice as gap year provides students with great sense of relief and precious
work experiences.

On the one hand, going on a gap year significantly aids the relaxation of a high
school graduate. As a norm, students, especially the Asians, are expected to
continue their study, without any interruption, until graduating as a university
student. Although this is one of the optimal approaches to secure a safe path for
any individual’s future life, students are presented with an abundance of deadlines
and school assignments, let alone the constant pressure driven from parental and
societal expectations. Fortunately, with the help of gap year, high school graduates
are given a variety of time and opportunities to unwind and enjoy other simple
pleasures of life such as travel or gym. For instance, my cousin was always
pressured into meeting his deadlines but in the end, he continually received
diminishing returns due to great amount of stress. However, ever since his one-
year break after the high school graduation, he has been more relaxed and
productive in his study and work. This is one of the two reasons why taking a gap
year is a-must for many students.

Besides, students are also believed to possess a high level of knowledge and
experiences in terms of work after the one-year break from their academic journey.
To be more specific, students’ time for other facets of life seems to be dominated
by their demanding and arduous studies at school. This, in many ways, allows no
room for other aspects of great importance such as work to prosper. As students
decide to take a year break, they tend to share more appreciation for the
development of their first steps to future career. In my cousin’s case, he partook in
a myriad number of teaching programs and exchange classes about English during
his one-year break, the result being that he possessed a decent level of knowledge
and skills as compared to his companions who did not consider gap year as an
option.

All in all, taking a gap year is an optimal way to enhance one’s relaxation and gain
precious career experiences. Students, indeed, are highly recommended to have a
year break after their high school graduation as to fulfill other personal likings and
passions.

Many students choose to take a gap year before starting university, to travel or gain
work experience.

Do you think this is a good idea or a waste of time?

Taking a year break from formal education, between high school and post-
secondary studies, might have a major impact on a person’s academic journey. For
many, a gap year is somewhat a lost cause since it is aimless and time-consuming.
From my perspective, a year away from schooling is conducive to a student’s
improved wellness and better academic performance.

Without a year break before entering higher education, students are prone to
complete exhaustion as a result of constant pressure. As a norm, students are often
subjected to an abundance of assigned readings and math problems, followed by a
massive amount of time spent on finishing them. This, however, is when tension
emerges and begins to torture the well- being of those individuals. Such an issue is
insurmountable unless the students are allowed to unwind and relax that can be
found during the gap year. Besides, when not considering a year break as an
option, students neglect the chance to foster their knowledge enrichment and real-
life experience that might be dedicated to their career path.

Taking a year off, without doubt, provides students with a sense of well- being and
valuable work experience. The extra time offered by this one- year activity can be
utilized by students to improve their physical and mental state. To be more
specific, they are likely to shift more attention to exercising, relaxing, and
partaking in many recreational activities such as traveling and swimming. This, in
turn, can enhance individuals’ relaxation, aiding their wellness in a significant
way. Moreover, going on a gap year lends way for a student to gain a more
thorough insight into their specified field and trial a range of internships for
valuable work experience. By doing so, high school graduates are likely to be more
decisive and professional in their future job.

All in all, the role of gap year is of great importance. It is the provision of time,
either for students to achieve a sense of relief or gain more understanding of their
future career.
