LESSON 5 HEADING Heading is an important skill to master, whether it be in defense or attack.

Youi
don’t have to be tall to be a good header of the ball, the secret is timing and bravery. There is only one
way to head a ball, and that is to use the center of the forehead and at the same time tense the neck
muscles. Never let the ball hit you is the rule. It should always be punched with the forehead.

1. basic heading

The basic principles of heading the ball are the same for attack and defense. Aim to meet te ball as your

forehead, keeping yours open and mouth shut, ‘attack’ the ball.

2. jumping head

Often to win a header you will have to meet the ball higher than head height, which means you must

jump to meet it.

3. basic heading

Back heading is particularly useful in attacking situations, adding a dangerous dimension to corners and

throw-ins.

4. heading for goal.

When heading for goal, try and direct your header downwards as a low ball is much better harder for a

goalkeeper to save.
