Indonesia consists of many ethnic groups and regions.

Each of these areas has its special


food. There is sweet, salty, and spicy food. Probably, in foreign countries, there are stages of
appetizer, main course, and dessert food. However, in contrast with Indonesian people, they
direct eat main course.

The main course eaten by Indonesians, in general, is rice. The rice is mixed with side
dishes which are local food in Indonesia. An example of local food that has spicy taste is Nasi
Padang. That food is from the West Sumatra region that has special side dishes is rendang.
Rendang made from beef with a lot of spices that served with various broths and green chili
sauce. Then, sweet taste food from Yogyakarta namely Gudeg. It made from young jackfruit
which is cooked in coconut milk that usually served with tofu, and chicken. Next, there is Nasi
uduk that similar with Nasi Lemak in Malaysia. It usually served with fried chips, tofu, egg,
tempeh, cucumber, and peanut sauce. It also can add with chicken and beef.

In the eastern part of Indonesia there is a heavy food made from sago namely papeda
that from maluku and papua. It has salty food that in the form of porridge which has a chewy
and sticky texture and then added with yellow tuna sauce seasoned with turmeric.

The popular food in all of region in Indonesia are fried rice and satay. Satay has many
variants such as chicken satay from Madura and beef satay from Padang. It also welknown for
lamb satay in all around Indonesia, especially Jakarta and West Java. Then, fried rice in
Indonesia is one the most favorite food for former president of America’s Barack Obama.

Apart from heavy meals, there are snacks or street food. The most popular is Seblak.
Seblak has a savory and spicy taste. This food is made from wet crackers cooked with
vegetables that can be mixed with eggs, chicken, and beef. Another spicy taste is namely Asinan
that made from various types of vegetables and fruits by added with salt and vinegar. Asinan is
similar to Salad. There is another snack that tastes salty, namely cireng. This food is a mixture of
dough made from starch or tapioca flour. Snacks that have a sweet taste, for example, such as
surabi, cucur, onde-onde, klepon. All the foods are traditional foods. Another traditional food
that has salty taste is Kerak Telor. It is similar to an omelet. However, kerak telor is added with
a sprinkling of dried roasted dried shrimp on top which is added with fried shallots, then given
the mashed spices in the form of roasted coconut, and red chilies.

All of the foods that have been explained also need beverages. The popular beverage in
Indonesia is coffee. If people like a bitter taste, there is Robusta coffee from central java. Then,
there is Gayo coffee from Aceh. The real taste of Gayo coffee is found in the fragrant aroma of
coffee and the savory taste is almost not bitter. Next, there are variants of Arabica coffee that
have light thickness and higher acidity than other coffees. You can find this coffee in Bali or
Toraja. Last, Luwak coffee, the coffee beans are taken from the remaining civet or coconut civet
droppings. Luwak coffee has a stronger fragrance than others. The taste of Luwak coffee is very
subtle and there is a hint of fruity acid which is refreshing.
