Hello everybody! I’m an exchange student in the United States, and I want to

share with you how I’ve felt these first 3 months. At the beginning, I really felt

homesick because I couldn’t get in touch with my family as

frequently as I was used to – you know that in China social networks are not
easily available. However, after a couple of weeks, I started feeling better and
even entertained about American culture. One of the biggest differences between
China and the USA is that school life here is really relaxing. The

assignments are easy so I have time to hang out with my friends and to

participate in social and cultural events. For example, two weeks ago, my

roommate , Kathy, invited me to celebrate Thanksgiving with

her family. We ate turkey and pumpkin pie, and I must admit that it was delicious.
Now, I’m really looking forward to New Year’s Eve because I’ve heard the

fireworks display is awesome and the parades along the main

streets are quite fun. The only problem now is the weather. These days, we’ve

had cloudy skies and, according to the weather report next week

it’ll be even worse.

Ok guys… I hope you liked my first blog entry. I will be telling you everything
about my new life as a foreign student in the USA.

THREE SPECIAL DAYS AROUND THE WORLD

Teacher’s Day

People in many countries celebrate World Teachers’ Day on 5th

October, but in Argentina it is on 11th September – the anniversary of
the death of former president, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento in 1888.
Sarmiento believed in the importance of education: he wrote ‘Schools
are the very basis of civilization’. Children traditionally write poems for
their teachers and give them an apple, make a cake or buy flowers. In
Vietnam, Educators’ Day is in November. Everyone has a day off
school, and many students visit their former teachers in their homes to
give them presents, or give news about themselves. And at some
schools in India, senior students become teachers, and teachers
become students for the day!

World Book Day

In many countries, Book Day is on 23rd April every year. It originated in

Catalonia in 1923 when booksellers decided to honour the Spanish
author Miguel de Cervantes who died on that day in 1616. In 1995, it
became an international event when books and reading are celebrated.
There are usually events such as writing competitions, and in Madrid
there is a public reading of Cervantes’s greatest work – Don Quijote –
which lasts 48 hours! In the UK and Ireland, all schoolchildren receive a
1-pound book token, and many children now dress up as their favorite
character from fiction!

Respect for the Aged Day

Grandparents’ Day is popular in many countries, but in Japan – a

country where nearly 30 percent of the population are over 60 – people

treat older people with special respect. This day is celebrated on the
third Monday of September. Everyone has a day off school or work and
they organize celebrations for the older people of the village or
community where they live. Young people dress up in traditional
clothes. They sing and dance and they either prepare a special meal or
eat out as a family. Nowadays, people also visit relatives and the older
people in their families, for a three-day weekend.
