• Positive Space: the main subject in an artwork
• Negative Space: the area surrounding the
subject

• Collage: a piece of art made by sticking
various different materials such as paper or
fabric onto a backing.

• Notan: Notan is a Japanese word meaning the
balance between dark and light. It is also an art
form involving paper-cutting and positive and
negative shapes.

Directions
• Fold black paper twice (in
fourths) and cut along the
folds.
• Keep one of the rectangular
black papers.
• Draw a shape two or three
times on each side.
• Cut out the shapes.
• Glue the main piece onto the
white paper, in the middle.
• Glue the smaller shapes
outside of the main shape so
that they appear symmetrical,
yet opposite in color.
