Abstract

The study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of traditional learning and game-based learning
as a tool for online learning to the Grade 4 students of St. Paul University at San Miguel, Bulacan. In the
paradigm of the study, game-based learning and traditional learning particularly the content,
environment and delivery of both method served as the independent variable. Aside from that, mixed
study were conducted which is the combination of quantitative and qualitative method. On the other
hand, the dependent variable involved students’ cognitive, attitude and motivation. The respondents
were 50 students which were given survey questionnaires as a tool for gathering their responses. The
result showed that the content of the game-based learning is arranged based on difficulty, composed of
optimumtopics, effective in achieving day one skills. Additionally, its environment is more into the
making the students to act on their own, plan on their own as well as participation of others in the
learning process. Futhermore, the delivery requires consideration of the attitude of the teacher and
different methods of teaching is also utilized and group task is also implemented. On the other hand,
traditional learning in terms of content, delivery and environment is the usual classroom set-up. This
kind of learning is mainly focused on learning style, more into book-based method of learning and
teachers will send the content for the student to learn. Game-based learning has a significant difference
as compared to traditional learning particularly in the attitude, motivation, cognitive development,
accessibility and preference. Respondents prefer the utilization of traditional learning for it promotes
long-term retention and they agreed that traditional learning is useful for their cognitive development.
