Mamie was the fourth black student to graduate her school. Her father left her when she
was about eleven and she had a strict upbringing. She married her first husband, the father of
Emmett, at eighteen years old. Her husband, late one night assaulted her so she defended
herself and got a restraining order. Emmett wanted to have an adventure and going to
Mississippi was the closest thing he would get to it. Emmet Till was a happy go lucky kid and
apparently he liked to joke around a lot and he was very cheerful which makes me really sad.
While I was already finding it hard to watch the documentary in class, learning that he was very
similar to the people I like to be around, he sounds like someone I would befriend, which makes
listening to this podcast even harder.
The two men who killed him got arrested. They were proven not guilty and released.
Soon they would move to the next state and would get paid 60000 dollars in order to fess up
and confess to kidnapping him. Sine they moved to a different state they could not be
prosecuted for the kidnapping and since they were already decided guilty, they couldn’t be
taken into court over the same matter. Mamie intercepted the coroner that was on the case and
asked him to send Emmetts body back home, even though it cost her, her annual salary, after
seeing what had happened to her child se decided that the whole world should know. I think she
did this because the court system didn’t serve justice so she decided that she would do
everything in her power to do it herself.
