A brief guide brought to you by KPU Career Services

• A CV serves as a comprehensive record of your education and/or work-related experience that is continuously updated over-
time. As a result; maximum page numbers are not set.
• Outlines the skills that you have developed over-time throughout your education, academic career and experience.
• Used in place of a resume in some counties (except in North America, where a resume is used instead).

• Commonly, a CV prepared as early as possible by individuals who are thinking about applying to a position that is related to
their academic career. Updating your CV over-time will be beneficial, especially if you decide to pursue an academic-related
career after completing either a master’s degree or a doctorate at a post-secondary.
• If you are applying to a research or graduate-related position after completing your education.

Headings can include but are not limited to (not necessarily in this order):
• Personal/contact information
• Education
• Experience (Professional/Work Experience, Extracurricular Experience, Academic Experience, Research Experience, Teaching
Experience, Papers and/or Presentations
• Publications
• Other headings (Certificates, Memberships, Affiliations, Awards and Scholarships, Honors, theses, study abroad, dissertations,
and/or fellowships)

This would typically include your first and last name, credentials, address, phone number, email address, website (if applicable);
although, it can include other personal information.

High school information is unnecessary. Indicate your program of study and the school as well as the date started and expected
graduation date.

Segmenting the Experience sections based upon your work (professional, volunteer and/or teaching), research, administrative
and/or academic experience can help make it easier to structure your CV and add onto it as time passes.

Heading include but are not limited to the following: Professional/Work Experience, Extracurricular Experience, Academic
Experience, Research Experience, Teaching Experience, Papers and/or Presentations.
