Analysis of GI Registered in Indonesia – Animal Husbandry

The business of selling Sumbawa horse milk, previously known

as wild horse milk, is now growing. This development cannot
be separated from the issuance of a Geographical Indication
patent certificate from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights
in 2011. This patent certificate is only for wild horse milk
products in the eastern region of Sumbawa Island, particularly
in Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara.

The Sumbawa horse milk now uses a special logo for the horse's head. The logo can only be
used for genuine unmixed horse milk products, which have good quality, and the process also
meets standard operating procedures as contained in the book of requirements to be called
Sumbawa Horse Milk. Milk that is allowed to use a certificate label is limited to that of members
of the Sumbawa Horse Milk Farmer Association.

Farmers who are not members of the association may not use the certificate. Even after they
become members, the use of this certificate is limited to milk produced in eastern Sumbawa. In
addition, the standard for the production process must also refer to the process in eastern
Sumbawa. Before being milked, the horse must be cleaned and received special treatment.
Farmers who collect milk must wear gloves, filter milk twice, and put the milk in a sterile and
labeled bottle.

Milk from horses that live in eastern Sumbawa has an antibiotic substance that can kill bacteria.
At least the benefits are the same as penicillin. So the name Sumbawa horse milk can only be
used for milk products from this area. If someone else uses it, the perpetrator can be punished
with the threat of 5 years in prison and a fine of Rp. 1 billion.
Currently, Sumbawa horse milk is only owned by an association in Dompu, with 15 members
and 25 horses. This means that there is a lot of potential in Dompu to be developed, he said.
Farmers can earn an average of Rp. 36 million per year from one horse. Acting Head of the
Dompu Gaziamansyuri Animal Husbandry Service stated that his party intends to continue
developing horse milk in Dompu.
