PREFACE
This edition of this standard was prepared by the Association’s Committee on Lift
Installations, to supersede AS 1735, Part 4 — 1982, Power-operated Service Lifts.
This Standard incorporates Amendment Nos. 1 (July 1989) and 2 (June 2000). The
changes required by the Amendments are indicated in the text by a marginal bar and
amendment number against the clause, note, table, figure, or part thereof affected.
This edition includes the following technical changes:
(a) Clause 5.1 extends the access dimension to 750 mm where an effective standing
surface is provided for maintenance of service lifts.
(b) Clause 26.1.3(a)(ii) has been redrafted to clarify its intent.
Other changes of an editorial nature have been made to bring the standard into line
with current SAA policy.

and should be serviced more frequently to ensure safety and serviceability.

APPENDIX A
SCREW-DRIVING MACHINES

These requirements for screw-type drives, which were included in the 1975 edition of this
standard, were considered to be inadequate in regard to safeguarding of the nut and
protection of the screw against whip. Because of the time required to investigate these
matters fully, it was not practicable to include other provisions.
Screw-driving machines for service lifts shall comply with the relevant requirements of the
standard and the following:
(a) Belts or chains. Where belts or chains are used to connect the motor to the driving
machines—
(i) belts shall be of the multiple V-belt type;
(ii) belt drives shall be applied with a power correction factor not more than 0.5 in
A1 accordance with AS 2784;
(iii) not less than two separate chains shall be provided;
(iv) chain drives shall have a factor of safety of not less than 10; and
(v) the machine brake shall be located so that failure of the driving belt or chain will
not prevent it from performing its intended function.
(b) Stressing of screws. Screws shall not be subjected to any external horizontal force
during loading or running of the car. The factor of safety of screws as a column shall
be not less than 4, based on the total weight supported including rated load in the car.
(c) Overtravel. Means shall be provided to maintain screws in position in the event of
excessive overtravel.

(d) Screws and nuts. Screws shall be of steel and nuts shall be of bronze or other material
having an elongation not less than 14 percent in a gauge length of 50 mm. The length
of thread in engagement shall be sufficient to avoid undue wear. Provision shall be
made for the visual inspection of the rate of wear of screws and nuts, without the need
for undue dismantling.
(e) Screw casing. A vertical casing, closed at the bottom, shall be provided to enclose and
protect any travelling screw below the nut where the screw travels below the pit floor.
(f) Statutory Authority. Screw nuts and screws shall be individually approved by the
Statutory Authority. Particular regard should be given to possible nut failure and screw
whip. Protection against screw whip for higher speed screws should be considered.
