class rules/governs the lower class.

Functionalists: The police ensure order in society, to remove those who don’t function

1. What do you think positivists mean by the “laws of social behaviour”?
Answer: Positivists think that society can be studied using approaches found in
natural science, such as causation, to ensure subjective truths. “Laws of social
behaviour” might mean that positivist think there is a causation or a strict link
between variables in social behaviour.

2. Why do interpretivists prefer different research methods to those preferred


by positivists?
Answer: Interpretivists believe that society cannot be studied using approaches in
natural science because humans are conscious beings. Because of that, social
reality does not exist separately from human actions. To understand actions,
interpretivists must first understand how humans make sense of their reality.
