ESTIMATION OF WELDING COST

WELDING: Welding is a process of joining two similar or

dissimilar metals by fusion. It joins different metals/alloys, with
or without the application of pressure and with or without the
use of filler metal. The fusion of metal takes place by means of
heat

The welding is widely used as a fabrication and repairing

process in industries. Some of the typical applications of
welding include the fabrication of ships, pressure vessels,
automobile bodies, bridges, welded pipes, etc.

Left-ward welding: started from right hand side of joint and proceed
towards the left hand side. This is suitable for thickness upto 3-5 mm.
Right-ward welding: started from left hand side of joint and proceed
towards the right hand side. This is suitable for thickness above 5mm.

Gas welding is can be done on plate only upto 25mm thickness .

Steps in solving problem on Gas
Welding
• Step1: always first calculate the length of weld.

• Step2: calculate time require to complete weld

• Step3: calculate amount of O2 consumed and cost.

• Step4: calculate amount of C2H2 consumed and cost.

• Step5: calculate amount of filler material used and cost

• Step6: now sum of all above cost and calculate total cost of welding.
Numerical problem
Q. Estimate the material cost for welding 2 flat pieces of m.s. 15x6x1
cm in size, at an angle 900 By gas welding. Neglect edge preparation
cost and assume:
a.) cost of O2=Rs.10/m3
b.) cost of C2H2=Rs.60/m3
c.) density of filler material= 7gm/cc
d.) cost of filler material=Rs.12/kg
e.) O2 consumption=0.7 cu. m/hr.
f.) C2H2 consumption=0.5 cu. m/hr.
g.) filler rod dia.=5mm
h.) length of filler rod required 4.5m/m of welding.
i.) welding time= 30min./m of welding
