My discussions are linked to Emile Durkheim's theory, which is primarily based on society's
desire for peace, stability, and the absence of disruptions in society. The government has four
main functions, according to functionalism: planning and directing society, addressing social
needs, maintaining law and order, and handling international relations. All facets of culture,
according to functionalism, have a meaning. Government and politics, according to
functionalists, are tools for enforcing norms and resolving conflict. Active social change, such as
the Wall Street sit-in, is viewed negatively by functionalists because it forces change and, as a
result, undesirable outcomes that may have to be compensated for. Functionalists seek social
consensus and order. Dysfunction causes social problems, which result in social change.
