As we read through the book, I will be adding questions for you to answer. Make sure that you
include a quote and page number for each answer in your explanations. Your answers should
be at least 3 sentences including the quote.

Chapter 1: What do you think that Amir may be foreshadowing?


“I realize I have been peeking into that deserted alleyway for the last 26 years.” ( page 2)
I think what happened in the deserted alleyway was that he saw a group of soldiers beating
people and shouting at them.

Chapter 2: What is the relationship like between Hassan and both his mother and father?
Hassan misses his mother and loves her even if she left him. Hassan and his father are also
very close to each other.

Chapter 3: Describe the relationship between Baba and Amir. Why do they have trouble
communicating?
Amir loves his Baba and is always trying to impress him by doing things Baba likes even if it
doesn’t interest him. The reason why they have trouble communicating is because Baba’s and
Amir’s passions and interests are completely different.

Chapter 4: How does the scene where Amir reads to Hassan illustrate their relationship as a
whole?
Amir reading to Hassan tells us that they are very close to each other and share the same spark
of interest in literature.

Chapter 5: Do you think Hassan made the right decision to stand up to Assef? Did the threat of
a slingshot prove to be effective?
Yes, Hassan made the right decision to stand up to Assef because that shows that Hassan
really cares for Amir and isn’t afraid to take action if needed to. The threat of a slingshot proved
to be effective as Assef and his friends left Amir and Hassan alone and unharmed.

Chapter 6: What is the goal of a Kite Runner? Which kite is considered the most valuable?
“For kite runners, the most coveted prize was the last fallen kite of a
winter tournament. It was a trophy of honor, something to be displayed on a
mantle for guests to admire.” (page 42)
The goal of a Kite Runner is to catch all the Kites that are cut. The last second kite that gets cut
is considered the most valuable kite and it is an honor to catch it.

Chapter 7: Why do you think Amir is haunted by the events of Chapter 7?


“I was afraid of getting hurt. That's what I told myself as I turned my back
to the alley, to Hassan” (page 65)
Amir is haunted by the events of Chapter 7 because he is constantly troubled by his memory of
Hassan's rape. He also blames himself for not taking any action towards saving Hassan like
Hassan has everytime Amir was in trouble.

Chapter 8: Write a two sentence summary.


Amir is still in shock and can't get out of his head about what happened to Hassan in that alley
and as a result he starts avoiding Hassan. On Amir's 13th Birthday, Assef shows up and gives
Amir a biography of Hitler as a Birthday present but Amir throws it in the grass.

Amir feels guilty and decides to hide a bunch of money and other stuff under Hassan's mattress.
Upon being asked as to how it got there, Hassan says he stole it.

Chapter 10: How do Amir and Babba escape Afghanistan? What problems does this cause
Amir?
Amir and Babba escape Afghanistan by travelling through a truck and then after that through a
fuel tank with the help of Karim. Amir gets sick while travelling in the truck and throws up 2 to 3
times on the way, He also struggles for air in the fuel tank and witnesses the death of Kamal and
his father.

Chapter 11: How is life different for Babba in America? What job does he have in each
location?
America for Babba is a place to mourn his memories as he misses Afghanistan and all of his
friends he had there and he works at a gas station. Babba was a businessman in Afghanistan.

Chapter 14: What drives Amir to return to Afghanistan?


Amir receives a message from Rahim Khan and finds out he is extremely ill. As Amir and Rahim
Khan were close to each other, he is compelled to to return to Afghanistan to pay him a visit.

Chapter 15: What does Rahim Khan say about the Taliban? Use a quote from the chapter.
Rahin Khan says that when the Taliban came it was celebrated by the Afghans as they thought
the fights were over and there was peace at last but soon they found out that it had gotten much
worse.
“"Nay, it's worse. Much worse," he said. "They don't let you be human."” (Page 171)

Chapter 16: What is the effect of switching the point of view to Rahim Khan in the chapter?
By switching to Rahim Khan’s perspective, we get a first hand look of details about Hassan's
adult life, but he also provides a first-person perspective on the destruction of Afghanistan by
political factions.
