Dear Jeff,

We are writing to request your permission to hold our annual ‘Build a Shelter’ STEM
event in the year 3/4 classroom block for the year 4 cohort. The STEM event aligns
with the Science and Design and Technology curriculum units and would be used as a
summative assessment task for students to complete at the end of the term. The
proposed STEM event would be held on Monday the 21st June 2021 from 9:00am
until 10:00am with set up commencing at 8:45am and clean up finishing at
approximately 10:15am.

Students will have been learning about different materials and how their properties
can influence their use and will be required to build an animal shelter using a variety
of materials such as wood, plastic, cardboard and paper. We have been in contact with
Michael and Debra Randall from Bundy Homes and a spokesperson from the RSPCA
Bundaberg to make a tentative arrangement for them to be guest speakers at our event
to provide students with knowledge and understanding of building structures and
animal shelters. The incorporation of these guest speakers would allow students to
make real word connections and participate in authentic learning opportunities.

Although there was an extensive material list, it has been split across the two
classrooms and Pizza Capers Bundaberg, who will be sponsoring this event, will be
donating cardboard boxes. The expenses for the materials listed has been organised to
come out of our classroom budget, therefore there will be no cost to the school. We
would like to ask parent volunteers to assist in the set-up, pack up and supervising of
students when designing and constructing their shelters.

A risk assessment has been created and attached to this document that details all risk
factors and prevention measures that will be put in place to minimalize any danger.
We appreciate your time in reading over our proposal and look forward to hearing
from you soon.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact one of us.
