ASSIGNMENT ON MATHEMATICAL LANGUAGE AND SYMBOLS:
VARIABLES COURSE&YEAR: BSA 1 SUBJECT CODE: GE 4 NAME: Rejie N. Ando DATE: March 14, 2021 Answer the following completely: 1. On your own perception, define Variables and illustrate the advantage on using variables in mathematics. Answer: Variables are letters or symbols that is unknown or anonymous yet. It helps you to give what you’re looking, by giving a temporary name, so that you can do concrete computations with it to find out its potential values. 2. List some important kinds of Mathematical Statements and illustrate each. Answer: a. Universal Statement – a particular property is true for all elements in a set. (“For All”) Example: All negative numbers are less than zero. b. Conditional Statement – if one thing is true then some other thing has to be true. (“If-then”) Example: If 256 is divisible by 4, then 256 is divisible by 2. c. Existential Statement – there is at least one thing for which the property is true. Example: There is a prime number that is even. 3. Based on your answer on number 3, match the type of statement below to the given examples inside the box.
i. This type of statement says that a certain property
is true for all elements in a set. Answer: B. All positive numbers are greater than zero.
ii. This type of statement says that if one thing is
true then some other thing also has to be true. Answer: C. If 378 is divisible by 18, then 378 is divisible by 6
