Application
1. Describe a performance-based test and its purpose.
A performance-based test is one alternative to traditional methods
of testing student achievement. Performance-based test measures how well students apply
their knowledge, skills, and abilities to authentic problems. Performance-based test
requires students to use higher-order thinking skills to go through a process and complete
their product or task. The emphasis on process and practical application encourages the
task to be based on real-life situations.  The key feature is that it requires the student to
produce something, such as a report, experiment, or performance, which is scored against
specific criteria. Performance-based test is especially useful for assessing students’
achievement of complex learning standard, assessing their ability to apply concepts they
learned to solve problems, and assessing skills.

2. Cite some advantages of performance-based tests over standardized tests.

While traditional testing requires students to answer questions correctly,
performance-based test requires students to demonstrate knowledge and skills, including
the process by which they solve problems. Unlike a traditional standardized test in which
students select one of the responses provided, a performance assessment requires students
to perform a task or generate their own responses. For example, a performance task in
writing would require students to actually produce a piece of writing rather than
answering a series of multiple-choice questions about grammar or the structure of a
paragraph.

3. Differentiate between standardized tests and performance-based tests.

Standardized tests attempt to take an “across the board” measurement of a
student’s educational ability. It is used to determine current averages and identify high
and low performers so that each student can be treated accordingly. All test takers answer
the same questions and are scored the same way. While performance-based test is a
system of assessment that allows students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills
in a learning environment that embraces their higher-order thinking skills, as well as
relating it to real-world situations.
