a) The following grades were achieved in a GCSE mathematics exam by a sample of 6 students:

(i) Calculate the sample mean grade and the standard deviation. (3 marks)
(ii) Construct a 95% confidence interval for the population mean grade. (4 marks)
(iii) State what assumptions have to be made in order to be able to construct the confidence
interval in part (ii). (2 marks)

b) A recently published magazine article claims that the average annual starting salary for UK graduates
is £29,000. In a random sample of 300 recent UK graduates, the average annual starting salary was
£26,500 with a standard deviation of £7,825.
(i) Construct a 95% confidence interval for the population mean annual starting salary for UK
graduates. (4 marks)
(ii) On the basis of your confidence interval, do you believe the magazine article’s claim that the
average annual starting salary for UK graduates is £29,000? Explain your answer (4 marks)

c) A clothes manufacturer claims that no more than 2% of its products are faulty. In a sample of 2000
of the manufacturer’s products, 75 were found to be faulty.
(i) Construct a 99% confidence interval for the proportion of all the manufacturer’s products
which are faulty. (4 marks)
(ii) Does the evidence support the manufacturer’s claim? Explain your answer. (4 marks)
