Romeo and Juliet SPES Paragraph - Gigi Lashley

Statement -The main flaw of the characters, Romeo and Juliet, is that they belong to
families who have a long history of hating each other.
Proof - During the ball when Romeo and Juliet first found out about each other, Juliet says
“My only love sprung from my only hate.” (Act 1 Scene 5) Juliet is saying that she knows that she is
supposed to hate any Montague. However, the only person she loves is a Montague.
Explanation - This is a problem because if the Montagues and Capulets hate each other then
Romeo and Juliet won’t be able to date and live their lives together. They will have to love each
other secretly, or not love at all.
Synthesis - If the two families happened to not be in a long feud, then Romeo and Juliet
wouldn’t have had to go through everything they went through to be together, such as taking their
lives. Therefore making their families hatred for each other, their biggest character flaws and
downfall.
