“Is it difficult to live up here?”
“Of course. It’s hard to breathe and
there are few comforts but we
survive.”
“We?”
“Yes, there are others. Many of the
homeless have found ways to survive. I
wish I could learn to live with them but
it is safer to return.”

I entered into this alternative Earth
just as the sun was rising. I was
greeted with great heaps of dust, a
stunning lack of vegetation, and the
occasional airship drifting past
overhead. I waited around for a
little before I was finally met by
my correspondent, Kuno. Here’s
how our interview went:
“So you’re homeless?” I asked.
“No. Not homeless...” He replied,
“but I’m beginning to understand
life outside of the Machine and it
may not be too long before I am
homeless.”
“What drove you to explore beyond
the Machine?” He paused for a
moment as if a little uncertain.
“I’m not sure. I think I just felt
incomplete in there. I wanted to see
what was out here, see for myself I
mean. Of course I had heard
lectures of the outside world but it
just never made sense to me in

I stepped into an odd little
dimension like none I had ever
seen. This place was called “The
Community” and it was a bit
smaller than many of the places I
have visited before. It was similar
enough to our own culture with
people, houses, schools, jobs, and
government. Yet, there was
something off about it; everyone
behaved in an eerily similar
manner. As I observed the people, I
came to a conclusion: there was
differentiation between individuals

but there was no individuality. I
learned that the people did
different jobs, lived their own lives,
had their own families, yet they all
had the same experience. I decided
to go undercover and talk to some
of the people in order to learn more
about their lives in this place.
Dressed in all white, I talked to
many people in a place I assumed
was the downtown area. In my
brief conversations, a few things
became clearer. These people do
not experience the same emotional is to escape society and explore the
states as we do. They do not
understand hardship nor do they
elusive, rugged frontier as many have
done in the past, this may be the

appear to be civilization beyond its
borders. It is a wondrous, blossoming,
expanse but there is no opportunity for
leisure or tourism. It is simply a true
untouched wilderness and perhaps that
is of your fancy if you are able to
navigate your way out of the dreadful
grasp of the Community. If your desire
