In the teaching and learning process, error correction and feedback are cannot be
separated. For a teacher, those are important and cannot be ignored. Error is categorized into
error and slip. The error refers to a mistake done by the learners when the learners do not
have sufficient knowledge of the language. There are several reasons why the error has
occurred. It occurs when the learners have never been exposed to language they have no prior
knowledge to refer to. It also happens when the language is acquired incorrectly. While slip
occurs when the learners know the language but due to the speed of conversation or other
factors and it incorrect either spoken or written. These kinds of slips are often self-corrected
or ignored.

In correcting errors, the teachers not only correcting but also providing the knowledge
necessary to fill the students’ gap in understanding. Correction of errors has to be well
structured and formulated. It should allow students to recognize how to form the correct
language, but without breaking the flow of the class. Then in correcting mistakes, the
teachers should correct mistakes the moment the learners made the mistakes. The correction
should easy and quick. The teacher should not delay correction, because the students will
look at the error and instantly know what the problem is. Besides making mistakes, the
students sometimes making slips. In correcting slips, the teachers shouldn’t need to be
corrected at all.

There are several error correction techniques such as classic error correction
techniques, adapted error correction techniques. Classic error correction techniques cover
metalinguistic explanation, repetition, direct explicit correction, direct explicit correction,
delayed correction, recast, paralinguistic explanation, elicitation, clarification request, and tell
them they are wrong. All of these correction techniques are acceptable and recommendable in
the classroom but the teachers should choose the best form of correction for the moment they
correct. While in adapted error correction, depending on the context and circumstances, there
are several ways to make error correction more interesting and ensure improve the students’
interlanguage such as post-it correction, error collection, stem correction, and anticipation.
