SUBSET
• A set ‘A’ is said to be a subset of a set ‘B’ if every element of ‘A’ is
also an element of ‘B’.
• Example :

4
NOTE
• A is a subset of itself, i.e. A  A
• ϕ (Empty set) is a subset of every set, i.e.ϕ A
• A  B and B  A ⟺ A = B
(where“⟺” is a symbol for two way implications, and is usually read as
if and only if )

UNIVERSAL SET
• A universal set is a set which contains all the elements of the other sets
• It is usually denoted by the letter U and all its subsets by the letters A,
B, C etc.

• Note that all sets are subsets of the universal set.

• A⊂U
• B⊂U
•C⊂U
