Description of People | Each paragraph should start with a topic sentence summarizing the
paragraph. Linking words of contrast, addition and result. Compound adjectives as
descriptors
1. Introduction – Who? How did you meet?
2. Paragraph – Physical appearance
3. Paragraph – Personality and lifestyle
4. Conclusion – Comments or feelings about the person, maybe explain.
Description of Places | Present tenses normally used in brochures, articles or when giving
factual information. Past tenses used when describing visits. Location verbs and
prepositional phrases. Express impressions and reactions with expressive words.
1. Introduction – Location and name. Why this place?
2. Paragraph – General description.
3. Paragraph – Particular details or specific story
4. Conclusion – Comments, feelings, maybe explanation.
Description of Objects | Found in catalogues, leaflets, reports, etc. May be more factual or
may be more personal.
1. Introduction – What? Where is it?
2. Paragraph – Accurate information describing object.
3. Paragraph – Specific details or emotions that the object generates.
4. Conclusion – Concluding feelings or future wishes for the object.
Description of Events | Present tenses used with formal descriptions of periodical events
Past tenses used with personal accounts of events. Passive voice used to describe
preparations or activities. Make descriptions more vivid.
1. Introduction – Name. When? Why?
2. Paragraph – Description of preparations
3. Paragraph – Specific event or activity
4. Conclusion – Comments, thoughts.
