Simple Machines

Work – When a force produces motion in the same direction as the force, work is done

Simple Machine – Devices that change the direction or size of the force applied. A simple machine
can help to reduce force.

4 classes – pulley

- Lever
- Inclined plane
- Wheel and Axel

Complex machines are made up of two or more

Inclined Plane – Less force over a greater distance

e.g. – Ramp, slanted road, path up a hill, slide, axe

Wheel and Axle – This machine consists of two different sizes. The smaller wheel is usually called the
axle. The wheel and axle can magnify a force or distance moved by a force.

e.g. – Cars, roller skates, wagons, door knobs, gears in watches, clocks, and bicycles

Pulley – A pulley is a lifting device consisting of a wheel with a rope passing over. Changes the
direction of a force applied with a rope or cable.

e.g. – crane, using the bucket in a well, raising a sail
