Prompt A: Do we live in a dystopia?

Prompt B: What is your opinion of the Earthseed religion and religion itself?

Prompt C: Free choice (From our reading of the novel, what would you like to write about? As
long as you are able to connect it to the novel, you have total freedom.)

Note:
- You do not have to explicitly mention the novel in this response but remember that it will
have to connect to the novel eventually.
- This is a pre-writing activity which we will later use to create an outline for the final
response.

Your prompt: Do we live in a dystopia?

Response: I believe we do not live in a dystopia. When you hear the word dystopia, you think
of a society in which there is great suffering or injustice. Typically a society that has a poor
government that fails to do helpful things. Our government may not be perfect but it protects
our citizens. Looking at the society in Parable of the Sower, we see a great example of a
dystopia. Diseases like measles ravage the population, people fight and die over water, and
new drugs corrupt the survivors. Overall it is a society full of danger with no restrictions. The
government we have is very different as it imposes many restrictions on our freedom through
laws. For example, if we take what is going on right now with COVID-19, many of us can
agree that our country is doing the best it can to stop this virus. Restaurants practice social
distancing and sports arenas do not allow any fans but if they do they are spread out.
COVID-19 in a dystopia would be a lot worse as there wouldn’t be any restrictions. Citizens
would live under harsh control.
