What is a verb complement?

• A verb that comes after another verb.

Some can be active: I'd rather remember the good things I've done.

Some can be passive:

I'd rather be remembered for the good things I've done.

Passive verb complements focus on information about the receiver of the action. Why is the doer
not stated?

Passive verb complement with base forrn

• The passive base form is be + past participle

It is used after: had better, would rather, modal verbs

Example: He'd rather be remembered for his work with the FBI.

He will be admired by many for the way he worked.

Passive verb complement with infinitive

• The passive verb complement with infinitive is: to be + past participle

to have been + past participle

• It is used after verbs such as appear, claim, deserve, expect, love, like,

seem, want, would like

Example: He deserves to be admired.

He appears to have been wanted by the police.

The passive verb compliment with -ing form is: being + past participle

• It is used after verbs such as: avoid, be worth, enjoy, love, mind,

recall, remember, regret.

Example: He avoided being apprehended for several years.

She recalled being devastated by the bad news.
