Personal Narrative College Essay 1
Personal Narrative College Essay 1
When my grandma was passing away, I picked up my guitar in hopes of bringing joy and
pride to her final moments, but she departed before I could share my own personal music with
her. My grief only fueled my passion for music. I was desperate to reignite and savor the bond
that music created in my family. I spent the summer practicing guitar and reflecting on the
brilliant life my grandma had lived. I taught myself by listening to music and learning from my
mistakes. Every time I played, I imagined my grandma listening intently by my side as the
melodies emanating from my guitar resonated in her ears and brought pride to her eyes.
Naturally gifted at music, I improved more that summer than I ever did in my entire musical
career. Reflection and grief preceded by trauma and loss drove my musical success. It is
important for me to share my passion for music with my loved ones since I was unable to do so
with my grandma.
I joined the Appassionata club during my junior year so I could play my music for older
people who were feeling alone in their nursing homes. Our first concert took place only twenty
feet from the table where my grandma spoke her last words to me, passing the day after. When it
was my turn to perform, I choked, overwhelmed by memories of her. After rushing to my car to
escape the embarrassment, I listened to my grandparents’ favorite jazz musicians and played
tunes on my guitar, using the music to soothe me and guide me back to my creative roots. That
day, I learned that my musical talents are unique and can help to calm my anxiety. Music is my
greatest talent because it has enhanced my life in so many ways. Being skilled at music is a talent
in itself, but I love using my gift to help others and myself. Sharing my music always brings a
smile to my family’s face and serves as a coping mechanism not just for grief, but for every
heavy feeling.
