In my propaganda poster persuading my classmates to maintain our ocean

cleanliness, I have utilized both the glittering generalities technique and a rhetorical question.
To achieve the glittering generalities device, I have used words like “shining”, “sparkling”, and
“glistening” and enlarged them so people are sure to notice them to demonstrate how our
oceans could appear and how beautiful they could be if people do not pollute them. The entire
slide is built around these “glittering” words that touch the viewers’ emotional sides and
describe an incredible, yet reachable, world. Along with using these powerful, undeniably
tempting words, I have included added reasons to preserve clean oceans like not to injure the
ocean animals with trash and not to kill the world due to global warming partially from polluted
oceans. Moreover, I added a rhetorical question by asking if the audience desires to live in a
clean or polluted world because I believe this device is one of the most persuasive from its way
of controlling the audience’s thoughts and encouraging them to agree with the speaker.
Essentially, it would be difficult to find a person who would choose to have polluted oceans over
sparkling, clean oceans because there are absolutely no benefits to the dirty oceans, but the
only reason all oceans are not clean is because people are reluctant to put in the effort to
rescue them. To visually persuade my audience, I used blue colors to represent the ocean
mindset, placed a white background to further highlight the theme of cleanliness, and portrayed
an image (smaller than the clean ocean image) of pollution to emphasize the tragedy that would
occur if this poster is disregarded.
I selected to persuade my classmates to preserve our clean oceans because this is an
immensely important issue to me. It falls under the broader category of preventing global
warming, which is close to my heart as I am a vegetarian finding as many ways as possible to
protect the environment. Additionally, I feel comfortable arguing with other techniques but have
spent little time on the glittering generalities device, so I wanted to learn more about it and
when I thought about arguing to keep oceans clean, it was perfect because glittering
generalities would work well to represent a beautiful ocean!
