Chemical Restrictions Food contact 2021
– valid for all brands in the H&M group
H&M group Chemical Restrictions have been updated and the changes are described in this letter. The
updates are mandatory for all orders with Order Placement Date from 1st February 2021.

Food contact products

• Amendments published during 2020 have been incorporated in H&M Chemical restriction Food
contact 2021.
• Added general Uruguayan requirements and material specific restrictions for waxes, paraffines
and elastomers.
• Added reference to Kazakhstan in general requirements

1.1. All Materials


- Clarification of hazard classification of Article 57 in Reach
- General ban of Phthalates

1.2. Ceramics and glass


- New tables with clear categories for ceramics and glass
- Lower limits for Lead for Cat 2 ≤ 1.1 l, the same limits as for cups
- Added metal requirements (Cobalt, Zinc, Barium, Antimony) for lip and rim for ceramics and
glass

1.3. Coating
- Added specific chapters for coating on metals and coating on wood and natural fiber for EU
- Added enhanced requirements and restrictions for coatings

1.4. Wood
- Removed Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organotin compounds and added
Trichlorophenol (PCP) and Tetrachlorophenol (PCP).
- Updated mold requirements to wood and natural fiber chapter
- Added antimicrobial requirement for natural fiber

1.4.1. Coating on wood


- Specified requirements on Overall migration, Formaldehyde, PAA, Bisphenol A, F, S and
colorfastness
- Specified requirements on monomers or other starting substances, additives, polymer
production aids and metals according to EU regulation 10/2011 and its Amendments.

1.5. Metals and Alloys


- Specified chapter for coating on metals and alloys
- Updated limit for tin in accordance with Warenwet

1.5.1. Coating on metals


- Specified requirements on Overall migration (OM), PAA, PAH, Monomers and other starting
substances, additives, polymer production aids etc.
- Added a Usage ban of Dimethylformamide (DMF) in accordance with H&M Group restriction
of DMF
- Specified colorfastness for colored polymer coating

1.6. Plastics
- Added a Usage ban of Dimethylformamide (DMF) in accordance with H&M Group restriction
of DMF
- Added Amendment 15 of EU Plastic Regulation 10/2011, annex II; e.g. PAA, Metals
- Added specific requirements for TritanTM
- Removed PAH requirement

1.7. Paper, Board and Paper napkins


- Compiled the requirements for paper and board with paper napkins
- Updated requirements to the new version of CEPI guideline for Paper and board
- Divided the requirements into virgin paper, board and paper napkins and NIAS requirements
for recycled paper, board and paper napkins
- Added requirements for antimicrobial treatment

1.8. Textile
- Moved odor and mold requirements (according to QS&R) to textile chapter from general
requirements
- Added Overall Migration for synthetic textile

1.9. Rubber
- Lower overall migration limit, and applicable for all rubber products
