Part II: Coach Reflections

Successes and Obstacles:

Some success and ongoing obstacles in these areas. These have been ongoing topics during our meetings:

New Assignment-
We spoke in great detail about the new assignment. The goal was for both of us to better understand what the
needs will look like at the sites. One large site-EZ with about 1,000 students and one small site CW with about
500 students. Vastly differing leadership styles and programs. EZ has more SPED, more staff but a larger
support team. CW is small and has had a new VP for each of the past years.

Varied Leadership Styles-

Esperanza: Given the large size of the school, collaboration is key. The expectation is each admin team member
understands their role/responsibilities and how it translates into the success of the school. Management tasks are
divided and delegated for efficiency. Non negotiables were outlined in the first meeting with the principal.

Cottonwood: Cottonwood is a smaller school site with a more “close knit” community, with a hands-on
leadership approach from the top. The expectation for me is to execute standard vice principal duties, which have
been outlined by the district.

COVID and Connecting-

Being new on a site this year is challenging since there are no relationships with current employees and students.
We frequently speak on strategies to visit classes, increase conversations with staff and most importantly become
a person that the principal, office staff and others will contact when support is needed. It would be very easy to
be present without significant contributions. Employees that work at multiple sites need to work harder to
validate their worth since they are on site less.

Collaborative coaching meeting with Andrea Paxton

This was beneficial in really talking about how communication and expectations are delivered. Andrea seems to
have a good grasp of working as a team and knowing that if the team does well the school does well. Her past
work with Shameka makes this transition easier, Matt also adds a bonus since he is doing well and is a strong
communicator. This collaborative meeting offer was offered at CW but not scheduled.

Instructional Leadership-
Specifically in regards to observations, evaluations and meetings with staff on their performance. Reviewing old
evaluations to learn what past goals were, communicating thoughts on areas of weakness with principal and
getting this feedback on paper for the teacher to know their target.

Positive Reinforcement-
The importance that work looks different and we need to build staff up on their success when we see what we
like. It is very easy to be critical on a zoom lesson, but the reality is that it is not our normal process and they
might do better if students were live in a controlled environment. How can we build on the positives and use these
moments to generate more moments of success? Evaluations and feedback are powerful tools if we allow them to
help send our message. I feel this needs to be considered when many staff are at the breaking point of frustration
and need to hear that their efforts matter and are appreciated.

Program Documents or ILP Related Materials Addressed:

During our collaborative meeting with AP we reviewed the goals established for the year. AP was able to offer
some good advice on achieving and supporting these goals.

The Admin Coaching Orientation was conducted on 9/23/20 as well. Great way for us to review goals and set
ourselves oup for success for the year.
ILP Goal and CPSEL Progress:
The collaborative meeting was helpful in this area. Shameka should be able to work with her site principal on
achieving progress in these areas. This will be a focus of future meetings.

Next Steps:
We will approach the future with great flexibility and uncertainty. The job could look very different dependent on
the direction we take for educating students and returning to campus.
