1. What was the major argument raised by Senator Francisco “Soc” Rodrigo. Against the passage of
the Rizal Bill?

-There are many controversial bills that is passed in the Philippines, Noli Me Tangere and El
Filibusterismo or known as Rizal Bill is one of it. When new laws are proposed, it prompts a debate
between the upper house and the lower house of the Senate and in the House of Representatives
before it could be officially approved as a law, this is under normal circumstances. Senator Rodrigo
raised an argument that the books of Rizal, specifically, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, were
written to directly attack and ridicule the Catholic Church. Rodrigo state, that it violates the Canon
Law of 1933, he also argues that the books are clearly anti-Catholic.

2. What was the major argument raised by Senators Jose P. Laurel and Claro M. Reto in support of the
passage of the Rizal Bill?

- Senators Jose P. Laurel and Claro M. Recto raised an argument about Rizal’s novels and
writings, according to them these novels and writings contains morality and should be read in each
generation. Filipinos should know the sacrifices and suffering of the people and events in the past for
it will help,guide and connect today’s and future life. Rizal wants to disseminate what really the word
“freedom”means and aimed at inculcating consciousness in the Filipinos.

3. Are there points of convergence between the supporters and opposers of the Rizal Bill based on
these statements?

-Yes, There were points of convergence between the supporters and opposes of the Rizal Bill
based on this statements since the thoughts are basically connected in a way that it teaches Filipino
citizens to preserve what we have, specifically our religion or morality.
