EXAMPLES OF TRADITIONAL PEACE KEEPING OPERATIONS BY UN:

1) UNITED NATIONS FOR PEACEKEEPING IN CYPRUS (UNFICYP):

The Security Council established the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) in 1964, to
prevent further fighting between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities.

2) UNITED NATIONS MISSION IN ETHIOPIA AND ERITREA (UNMEE):

The conflict between Eritrea and Ethiopia arose from unresolved territorial issues between them in May
1998. After unsuccessful attempts of both of the leaders to solve the conflicts peacefully, the two parties
consented to the requirement of UN peacekeepers to act as a third-party. UNMEE troops performed the
role of an impartial mediator for both Ethiopia and Eritrea in order to ensure a peaceful atmosphere.

EXAMPLES OF COMPLEX PEACE KEEPING OPERATIONS BY UN:

1) UN MISSIONS IN THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH SUDAN (UNMISS):

The United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) was established in 2011 and was
mandated to consolidate peace and security, and to help establish the conditions for development with
a view to strengthening the capacity of the Government of the Republic of South Sudan to govern
effectively and democratically and establish good relations with its neighbours.

2) UN INTERIM FORCE IN LEBANON (UNIFIL):

The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was established in 1978 in response to a surge in violence on
the border between Israel and Lebanon. UNIFIL stepped in to provide protection and humanitarian
assistance to the local population. The Israel-Hezbollah War in 2006 further necessitated the expansion
of UNIFIL, to conduct military observations in addition to their peacekeeping duties.
