Syllabus:
Unit 1: Maxwell’s equations of Electrodynamics; Wave equation – Plane waves;
Reflection of EM waves at dielectric and metal surfaces – normal incidence case;
Guided EM waves; Microwave resonators.
Unit 2: Wave particle duality – experimental support; Uncertainty Principle;
Schrodinger’s equation – Wave function, its properties and statistical interpretation;
Particle in a Potential Well; Potential Barrier and Quantum Mechanical Tunneling;
Simple Harmonic Oscillator – Qualitative idea of the wave function and energy levels.
Unit 3: Bonds in Solids; Band theory of solids – simple model; Electrons in metals as
Fermi gas – simple theory for electrical conductivity, superconductivity; Bands in
semiconductors; p-n Junction formation and charge transport under bias field;
Working of Photodiodes and Tunnel Diodes .
Unit 4: Nuclear reactions and applications – Types of reactions, conservation laws;
Alpha , Beta and Gamma decay; Radio-isotopes; Fission reactions; Nuclear fusion for
power generation.
Unit 5: Elementary Particles (Qualitative) – forces of nature, Particles and Anti-
particles; Families of Particles; Particle interaction and decays; Quark model; Standard
model.
Unit 6: Nonlinear Dynamics(Qualitative) – ‘Chaos’, bifurcation, strange attractors,
fractals, self-similarity, occurrence in nature.
