ChE Thoughts
Editorial
Volume 02, Issue 01
February 2011
This is the first issue of ChE Thoughts in 2011 and I welcome you all.
In the last few months we have experienced several natural calamities
in different parts of the world: series of floods in Australia, snow storm
in North-America and Europe, super cyclone in Australia and the recent
earth-quakes in New Zealand. These incidents have both long term and
short term impacts on local life, regional economy as well as global
economy. From the original estimates, the floods will cost the
Australian economy about $10 billion which can be even few times
higher when considering long term impacts. The floods hit
Queensland’s coal mines which produce 35 per cent of Australia’s
exportable coal. Many of these recent natural calamities have direct
correlation with climate change. The irregular behaviour of climate is
becoming more frequent and the impact is getting even more severe.
The United Nations is working with world leaders to increase global
concern on issues like greenhouse gas, global warming and climate
change. In the 2010 United Nations Climate Change Conference
(Cancun, Mexico), the world leaders recognized climate change as an
urgent and potentially irreversible threat to planet Earth (or our
planet). Scientists and engineers from different parts of the world are
also working on various aspects of these menacing issues.
This issue of ChE Thoughts features articles on the emission and
mitigation options of anthropogenic methane as a greenhouse gas and
low carbon economy options; other classic Chem Eng & Sci topics, such as
environmental engineering, unit operation, energy efficiency and
renewable energy, etc. are also featured in the regular sections. In future,
we aim to have special editions on important and cutting edge matters
like global warming, climate change, energy, bio-technology, etc.
Last but not the least, 21st February was the International Mother
Language Day by UNESCO which is originated to internationally
recognize the Bengali Language Movement in 1952. I commemorate
those who sacrificed their lives to establish Bengali (Bangla) as an
official language of Bangladesh, the then East Pakistan.
Sincerely,
