Chapter 2, Problem 15QP

Problem

For each of the following species, determine the number of protons and the number of neutrons
in the nucleus:

Step-by-step solution

Step 1 of 6

To determine the number of protons and number of neutrons in the nucleus -:

Atomic number is 2 therefore number of protons = 2

Number of neutrons = A – Z
A=3
Z=2
Therefore number of neutrons = 3 – 2 = 1

Step 2 of 6

Atomic number is equal to number of protons is equal to 2

Number of neutrons = A – Z
=4–2=2

Step 3 of 6

Atomic number is equal to number of protons and that is equal to 12

Number of neutrons = A – Z
= 24 – 12 = 12

Step 4 of 6

Atomic number is equal to number of protons = 12

Number of neutrons = A – Z
= 25 – 12 = 13

Step 5 of 6
Atomic number is equal to number of protons = 22
Number of neutrons = A – Z
= 48 – 22 = 26

Step 6 of 6

Atomic number is equal to number of protons = 35

Number of neutrons = A – Z
= 79 – 35 = 44
