Home births without assistance are usually carried out with the assistance of a traditional
birth attendant. In a remote rural community in Riau Province, Indonesia, unaided home
delivery can also occur with the assistance of untrained husbands and / or in-laws.
Objective: This study was to explore traditional childbirth practices performed by
husbands and / or untrained in-laws to assist with home births. Setting and Design: This
is a qualitative study. Data were collected in three districts in Riau Province, Indonesia.
Methods and Materials: In-depth interviews were used as a data collection method.
About 18 respondents were recruited using snowball sampling. Data were transcribed
and analyzed thematically. Result: In determining untrained labor, husbands and / or in-
laws used oil practices. To relieve labor pain, wrap a piece of traditional long cloth at the
very top of the woman's abdomen, clamp the umbilical cord by tying the white thread
around the umbilical cord three times, and cut the rope using non-sterilized bamboo.
Bathe the baby after birth Conclusion: This study provides insight about traditional
childbirth practices. These findings are important for making sound and effective health
policies and interventions.
