VOCABULARY UNIT 1 3º ESO

1. Cell: smallest unit of a living thing capable of performing the 3 vital functions (i.e., nutrition,
interaction and reproduction). Célula.

2. Mitochondria: organelle where cellular respiration occurs. Mitocondria.

3. Ribosomes: being the smallest organelles of the cell, they take part in the process of making
cellular proteins. Ribosomas.

4. Endoplasmatic reticulum: net of membranous sacs that stores substances and transports them
within the cell. Retículo endoplasmático.

5. Golgi body: organelle that receives substances from the endoplasmatic reticulum and transports
them outside the cell by means of vesicles formed within it. Aparato de Golgi.

6. Vesicles: organelles that store nutrients, materials absorbed by the cell and waste substances.
Vesículas.

7. Lysosomes: small vesicles full of digestive substances. Lisosomas.

8. Cytoskeleton: part of the cell that holds the organelles /organél/, gives shape to the cell and takes
part in cellular movements. Citoesqueleto.

9. Centrioles: they organise the separation of chromosomes during cell division and take part in the
formation of filaments, cilia and flagella. Centriolos.

10. Nuclear membrane: double membrane with pores of the nucleus that communicates it with the
cytoplasm. Membrana nuclear.

11. Organ: group of tissues that perform an specific function (or group of functions). Órgano.
