You are expected to provide

✓ clear explanation of each step of your solution,

✓ units,
✓ well annotated, scaled plots (title, axis labels, grid, legend), not random hand sketches,
✓ source code attached to your solution if you use a software package in your calculations.

Your grades are subjected to these items as well as your calculations.

Problem 1)
Consider the system shown below. The uniform slender bars A and B are identical and have mass
𝑚 and length 𝐿. They are attached to each other with a massless rigid link. The lower bar B
attached to the simply supported beam via a spring. Derive the equation of motion for the system
in terms of the rotation θ of bar A using energy method and determine the equivalent torsional
system 𝐼𝑒𝑞 , 𝑘𝑡,𝑒𝑞 and 𝑐𝑡,𝑒𝑞 . Assume small oscillations. The configuration shown is in static
equilibrium.

Figure 1
The beam deflection formula for the simply supported beam is given below.

𝐹𝑏𝑥 2
(𝐿 − 𝑥 2 − 𝑏 2 ) 0≤𝑥≤𝑎
𝑦(𝑥) = { 6𝐸𝐼𝐿
𝐹𝑏 𝐿
( (𝑥 − 𝑎)3 + (𝐿2 − 𝑏 2 )𝑥 − 𝑥 3 ) 𝑎≤𝑥≤𝐿
6𝐸𝐼𝐿 𝑏

Problem 2)
Consider the system shown below. The cylinders are rolling on each other without slipping. The
beam has mass 𝑚 and mass moment of inertia 𝐼𝑏 about its center of mass shown. The cylinders
are connected to the mass and the beam with ropes that are always in tension. Obtain the
equation of motion in terms of the mass position 𝑥 by using the energy method and equivalent
translational system 𝑚𝑒𝑞 , 𝑘𝑒𝑞 , 𝑐𝑒𝑞 and 𝐹𝑒𝑞 . Assume all movements to be small. The configuration
shown is in static equilibrium.
