COLORED PENCIL MagazineBALLPOINT PEN &
COLORED PENCIL
by Allan 4
Barbeau y
\
My name is Allan Barbeau. I’m
French, born in La Rochelle, and
the will to draw has been there
since the beginning. Most kids
draw, but when they hit their teen
years they usually stop to focus
more on exams and other interests.
I was not like the others - I was
more interested in drawing than
studying for exams,
Actually, I never stopped drawing, and my
parents paid for drawing lessons for a year
when I was a cook’s apprentice. Until my
20s, I was a good copyist, but never created
the sort of things I liked. Later, I moved
with my future wife to Ireland, the land of
leprechauns and faeries. We spent 12 years
there, and two children were born on that
green land. It was during that time that my
skills and techniques grew to a point that I
‘was pleased with what l was producing, With
that, [ have been able to work professionally
since 2007 as a portraitist and illustrator.
In the summer of 2016, we moved back to
France and now live in the countryside, in
the center of BrittanyIt was back in 2005 that I started to use ballpoint seriously. Back then, the internet did not have
the great ballpoint pen artists it does now. I was looking for a medium that was unusual and that
could get incredulous reactions from viewers.
I worked on my skills for the next five years before I got really good. I got to the point where
other artists where inspired to use ballpoint pen after seeing what I could do with it. During that
period, I wrote a book that was published in 2010 titled The Art of Drawing with a Ballpoint Pen
The Technique, originally written in French, now available in English.
Hove working with colored pencil as well Ilike how soft the effec can be. I started s
touve both inthe same draving and found thatthe work really welltgethec.1can
utilize each of ther strengths. [usually start with colored pencil and when I need ~
more contrast, or more detail for precision, that is when ballpoint pen comes in. (@

Some tips I would give to someone just starting out in ballpoint is that a first, you need
to use light pressure, especially when hatching, Start with very light tones, then mot
to darker ones, You need to build your layers one by one to keep control of your tones
because if you go too far, it’s going to be difficult to go back with an eraser, as it is not
very erasable. This means you need to be prepared and plan your drawing out thoroughly.
-OLORED PENCIL Magazine | June 2019Just remember, nothing is impossible. Live your
dream, and enjoy life. Don't wait ~ make the
most of the time you have and live in the now.
My future plans are to build a simple life in the
countryside, I'm working on a studio where
people can come together to share skills and
work with me on all the things I love to do -
sculpting, painting, drawing, and more. I want to
create an environment full of joy and creativity.
The workshop opens September 1, 2019 and
is open to English speakers, so if you get the
opportunity to come to the center of Brittany,
you are welcome!
COLORED PENCIL Magazine | June 2019 | www.coloredpenciimag.com 9A Beller Reference Photos /
Question:
I would like to start taking my own photo references,
but I’m still a bit of a beginner. Do you have any tips?
Answer:
Taking your own photo references for your artwork not,
only gives you complete creative control, but is a great
way to expand your skills asa creator. If you dont have a
professional or prosumer type camera, donit worry. Many
smart phones come equipped with cameras that can do
amazing things and there are a lot of photo editing apps
that can help take your photos from good to great!
Rather than focusing on commonly covered areas like the types
of cameras or apps you could use to start taking photos, lets talk
about some basics. While your technical skills with lighting,
aperture, and shutter speed will improve over time with practice
and training; these other aspects are crucial to nail ahead of time
to have great photos to work from right away.
COMPOSITION
Setting up a unique composition with interesting
objects or subject matter can make a really
dynamic piece. Try mixing textures and size
of objects in your arrangement. Think about
positioning of each piece in a way that will allow
Your eye to travel throughout the photo. Having
strong composition is crucial to the success of
the drawing your later create. If you rely heavily
on your photo reference being exact, this is the
time to work out any kinks with tension points or
awkward negative space issues.
10 COLORED PENCIL Magazine | June 2019 | www.coloredpenciimag.comLIGHTING
hting is another important factor in your photos. It can
set the mood for your piece and be the difference between
a piece that comes off relatively lator incredibly dynamic
Take these factors into consideration when you're taking your
photos. It might be worth experimenting with different light
sources like lamps, natural light, high contrast or artificial
light settings.
Different objects and subjects
will look different depending on
how they are lit. You could even
try back lighting something that
is semi transparent for an extra
dynamic effect
SUBJECT MATTER
‘There are no hard and fast rules
when it comes to subject matter
since this ean be anything that
interests you. That being said, if
wildlife is the focus of your work
itcan be a lttle trickier, especially
when you are trying to capture
something that moves! With
that particular subject it's worth
investing in a camera and lenses
that will allow you to capture
enough detail for you to work
from. In the case of still subject
matter pick objects that are not
only of interest to you but that
will be realistic for you to execute.
Depending where you are in your
skill level you may not want
to tackle something that is too
complex just yet. If you're up for
the extra challenge though, just
g0 for it!
COLORED PENCIL Magazine | June 2019 | www.coloredpenciimag.com 1112
DISTANCE AND CROPPING
Macro photography gives you the opportunity to take
detailed shots of subject matter with interesting patterns
or textures. A great example is taking a close up photo
of an object that is normally depicted from far away like
flowers or a face. Ina macro shot, you would instead focus
‘on a close up of the petals or just the eye on face. These
types of shots can make for really engaging abstract pieces
‘of art while still living in the realm of realism,
By contrast, taking your photos at a further distance and
at a high enough resolution, you give yourself the option
to experiment with different crops and perhaps get more
than one piece out of one photo by simply cropping it
differently. A unique or creative crop can take an average
photo to an interesting one in a matter of seconds.
Much like anything, the more you practice the more you will improve. Experiment with elements
of your photos like lighting, composition and subject matter and soon you will find something that
works well for you and your artwork.

Thave been painting since I was a little girl. I always had
crayons in my hands and some sort of notebook or sheets of
paper - I scribbled on everything. My school books where
always full of doodles and imaginary animals. I would ask
my mother to draw me horses, mermaids, princesses, or
dolphins. To me, she was the best artist in the world, and I
‘was always obsessed with painting.
When I reached the age of 16, I decided to go to art
school for two years before going to university. I
\\_ Begin mapping out a random galaxy pattern in
the remainder of the downstroke areas. Start
with white then work through the darker colors,
again using light pressure and circular strokes.
COLORED PENCIL Magazine | June 2019 | www.coloredpenciimag.com 33,‘Add an additional layer of color to the
6 ‘| downstrokes following the pattern you created.
\ / Increase your pressure slightly and begin to
overlap neighboring colors to blend them.
Continue adding color and blending, keeping a balance of
light and dark areas. On the final layer of color, use lots of
pressure to burnish your piece, providing a rich color payoff.
Using your white opaque medium and a crow
) quill pen or detailer paintbrush, dot stars on the
) downstroke areas, varying the size of the dots to
create depth. Optionally, add some starburst or
shooting star strokes.
Add a drop shadow. Imagine a light source at the
upper left of the lettering that would result in
shadows that fall to the right of and below all
of the lettering lines. Draw a dark grey line to
represent these shadows, leaving consistent space
between the letters and the shadow. Blend this shadow line by
using a lighter grey to create the appearance that the shadow
is darker closer to the lettering.
