Pipe Sizing Hydraulics Exercise
Pipe Sizing Hydraulics Exercise
Your Task:
1. What would be the Pipe Size (ID) required for an allowable pressure drop of < 0.5 bar across the pipe
assuming you found a supplier who sells commercial pipe sizes as per ANSI/ASME B31.3.
2. Choose pipe sizes & Plot a graph, Pressure drop (Y-axis) Vs. Pipe Diameter (X-Axis) for a flow rate of
25000kg/h
3. What is the inlet pressure required at the pipe inlet at Vessel A Pump discharge. (This determines what is
the pump discharge pressure required).
4. What size of a pipe is required to arrive at pressure drop of =< 0.1 bar/100 m pressure drop.
5. What is the velocity of the condensate in the pipe for the selected pipe.
6. If Pipe Roughness is 100 m, what is the pipe size required, pressure drop and velocity in the pipe.
Notes:
1. Work out a full set of hand calculations using Equation Editor in MS Word & format it neatly with all
equation numbers & step by step calculations. Use SI/Metric Units for consistency and right answers.
2. ANSI/ASME B31.3 represents Chemical Plant and Petroleum Refinery Piping. This standard applies to
major facilities onshore and offshore worldwide. You can use the Internet to search for the pipe
size table for ASME B31.3 Pipe Sizes.
3. For Pressure Drop calculations,
In case if you think there isn’t enough information, try assuming them & also explain why you
chose them in the report.
