INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Foregrounding is borrowed by stylisticians from art criticism, which distinguishes

between the foreground and the background of a painting. The theory of foregrounding

is probably one of the most important theories within Stylistic Analysis, and

foregrounding analysis is arguably the most important part of the stylistic analysis in

poetry. The purpose of foregrounding, linguistic or non- linguistic, is to add an unusual

and unique idea in the language. Foregrounding can be achieved in two ways,

“Deviation and “Parallelism/ Repetition”. Deviation is turning aside from a said norm or

grammatical rule while parallelism is repetition of sound, structure, word or idea.

This paper mainly focuses on the analysis of foregrounding features that can be

found in Manuel E. Arguilla’s Midsummer. This theory centers on how a part of the text

contributes to the total meaning. From the analysis, I hope that readers can expand

knowledge of how foregrounding be used in the literary texts.
