2{[Nowadays cylindrical details with polyhedral surfaces found their application in different field of economy, such

as mechanical engineering, instrument-making, manufacture of robots, agricultural industry, mineral industry and
even in medicine. Hardwares often have outer surfaces that in section are limited by regular polygon for griping
purpose.

Polygonal surfaces are produced usually by milling or grinding on conventional or CNC multifunctional specialized
machine tools. When milling or grinding these structures, if the process area is small, there will be problem of low
efficiency. Traditionally, milling machine with combined dividing head were used for forming of multifaceted
surfaces. However, the use of such equipment is only effective for mass and large-scale manufacture. Under the
conditions of mass-production, effective and expensive equipments will idle, besides, it greatly increases the cost of
details and its using will not make economic sense.<cost of milling machine + cost of CNC>
Polygonal turning is a new developed process which allows non-circular forms to be machined without interrupting
the rotation of workpiece. Some investigations have been done with tool-holder’s structure and the methods to
machine faces.
Recently, numerical control machines that allow to handle a large range of products on the one equipment have
received wide application. But our idea is to utilize the old fashioned lathe machine to do work.
Processing of polyhedral form details on the numerical control machines is accomplished by polygonal turning.]}

[The conception of polygonal turning consists in rotation of workpiece and tool, that have parallel axis of rotation.
Thus and so movement pattern of tool relative work material’s system of coordinates will be described by longish

method to produce parts with polygonal cross-section by turning.

Based on hypotrochoid curve construction, a mechanism which combines motions of workpieces
and cutting tool to machines polygons’sides is proposed.]
