Article Summary

The Medical Pareto Principle

Health care is one of the industries that experience an increasingly rapid change,

including technology and innovation. This has constantly called for consideration in what it will

take to change the 80-20 healthcare principle. The 80-20 rule, also known as the Pareto principle,

implies that 20% of the causes result in 80% of the effects in many events. This statement is

ascertained by entrepreneurs, customer service representatives, and even some

nutritionists (Admin, 2015). Essentially, the 80-20 principle alludes that 80% of healthcare

revenue are spent on 20% of the entire population. On the contrary, the remaining 20% of the

revenue are spent on 80% of the population. The article describes Greek healthcare utilization by

assessing the application of the 80-20 rules in primary and secondary health care services. It

alludes that a small number of patients from a more significant percentage in primary healthcare

consultations and admissions. Elsewhere, chronic diseases such as diabetes and HIV/AIDs and

multimorbidity are significant variables increasing health care utilization.

Despite the revolution and the technological advancement in the healthcare industry, the

80-20 principle has remained steadfast. Consequently, why these advancements have not

impacted more favourable odds and what can be done to stop the bleeding are questions in a

dilemma in the united states health care (“MedCity Influencers,” 2021). It is known that therapy

adherence drives the healthcare cost down. On the other hand, improvements in disease

prevention and treatment medications have increased hope in patients suffering from incurable

and untreatable illnesses. For instance, the viral load can now be kept undetectable in the

majority of the HIV patience and cure various instances of Hepatitis C (HCV) with a single drug

administered after several weeks. However, the efficacy of these curatives highly depends on

distinguishing adherence to medication.

To shift the Pareto principle, many factors call for reconsideration in the health industry.

First, a healthy lifestyle is too weak despite the care efficacy advancements for chronically ill

patients. While tools such as the internet amalgamated with the preventions programs have made

the nutrition information available, Diabetes is still expected to skyrocket. The CDC predicted

that in 3 Americans, one would have Diabetes by 2050. By extension, a healthy diet in the united

states is more expensive than an unhealthy diet, validating the future prevalence of Diabetes.

Sponsors should consider Increased preventive repayments within the value-based care shifts

that improve outcomes while reducing costs (“MedCity Influencers,” 2021). Payer, provider, and

pharma cooperation are also vital. For example, the cost for eliminating the Hepatitis C virus and

liver transplant are both expensive. Therefore, reducing therapy cost, driving adherence, and

securing patients’ payment authorizations access helps improve medical outcome.

It will take extensive improvements in medication therapy and medical advancements to

shift the 80-20 healthcare rule. Achieving this requires adopting a healthy lifestyle and proper

nutrition, increased access and adherence to health care for chronically ill patients, and a higher

level of practitioners’ payments for protective services (“MedCity Influencers,” 2021). In

addition, there are modern pieces of equipment with increased knowledge; however, achieving

the shift in the medical Pareto principle will be achieved through will and mutual responsibility.
